The Botanic Gardens of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore established during the year 1908. It is one of the important gardens in Tamil Nadu and also the foremost of the Institutional gardens in India. The garden serves as a valuable centre to educate the concepts of floriculture and landscaping to the students and scholars of educational institutions and also acts as a treasure house for garden lovers and visitors. The garden has been maintained by TNAU since its formation from July 1972 and presently it spreads out to an area of 47.50 acres.
The garden holds a diverse and rich collection of native and exotic flora representing about 800 species. The plant wealth includes various foliage and flowering trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, cacti and succulents, different types of lawn grasses, cut flowers like Chrysanthemum, Orchids, Anthurium and traditional flowers like Jasmines, scented Roses, Tuberose, Marigold, Crossandra, flowering annuals, Bougainvillea and Hibiscus collections, Medicinal Plants park etc. Environmental protection and conservation of nature’s wealth is gaining importance both from education and tourism point of view.
Botanical garden not only serves as a spot of conservation but also deals with the aesthetic and therapeutic aspects to students, city dwellers and urban public. Students, researchers, farmers, nurserymen, gardeners, Botanists, Scientists, Physically challenged citizens, mentally disabled citizens, senior citizens, Agricultural & Horticultural Dept. However, the entry of the vehicles up to the falls is not allowed, so one must need to trek to reach Catherine Falls.
